On the Front Range, choosing a shingle is mostly a decision about hail.

We install Atlas shingles and the components that go around them, as an Atlas Diamond Contractor. Hail is the fact that shapes every other choice here: one spring storm can bruise a whole street of standard shingles and leave the roofs a block over untouched, which is why the conversation usually starts with impact resistance rather than color.

The lineup

Two Atlas lines cover most of the roofs we build.

The shingles we install carry Atlas' strongest construction: HP42 wide-format architecture on the Pinnacle line, Core4 polymer technology on StormMaster, 3M Scotchgard Protector against algae streaking, and Class 4 impact options for hail, with wind coverage of 130 to 150 mph depending on the line.

Pinnacle Pristine

The workhorse of our residential replacements. Pinnacle Pristine is built on Atlas’ wide-format HP42 platform, with an oversized nailing area a crew can actually hit and a double sealant line for wind, and its limited warranty covers winds to 130 mph at the standard application. 3M Scotchgard Protector resists the black algae streaking that shows worst on a light roof, the color range runs from weathered woods to deep slates, and the residential warranty is Atlas’ Lifetime Limited coverage.

StormMaster Shake

The shingle we reach for when hail is the deciding factor, which on the Front Range is most of the time. StormMaster Shake is SBS polymer-modified asphalt rated Class 4 in the UL 2218 impact test, the highest rating an asphalt shingle can earn, with wind coverage to 150 mph and the deep shadow lines of a cedar shake without cedar’s upkeep. A Class 4 roof may also qualify for a discount on the wind and hail portion of your homeowner’s policy; ask your insurer what they allow.

What goes with it

The shingle is one layer of five.

Beyond the shingle we install the full system: underlayment, starter strip, hip-and-ridge, and ridge ventilation. Manufacturers write their strongest warranties around a complete, correctly installed system rather than a shingle on its own, and those components are also where a roof tends to fail first. It is not an upsell, it is where the leaks come from.

Underlayment, starter strip, hip-and-ridge and ridge ventilation, specified to work together so the warranty covers the roof and not just the shingle on top of it.

Four things to check, whoever you buy from.

Impact ratingHow is it rated for impact?
Class 4 is the top rating in the UL 2218 impact test and the one that matters most here. Ask your insurer what they allow for it before you decide.
Wind ratingHow is it rated for wind?
Downslope wind off the mountains arrives well above what a basic shingle is rated for. Check the rating, then check what the installation has to look like for that rating to hold.
UV at altitudeHow does it hold up to UV at altitude?
Thinner air means more intense UV, which ages asphalt faster than the same product would at sea level. It is a real reason not to buy on price alone.
Warranty termsWhat does the warranty actually cover?
Warranties are strongest on a complete system, correctly installed. We show you what is actually covered instead of quoting a headline number of years.

Why do you install Atlas?

They deliver on the things that decide how a roof ages here: impact resistance, wind coverage, and the quality of the components that go around the shingle. We hold Atlas' Diamond contractor tier, the top of their program, so the partnership is checkable rather than claimed. If you are weighing another manufacturer, we will go through the trade-offs with you rather than talk you out of it.

Are impact-resistant shingles worth it?

For most Front Range homes, yes. A Class 4 roof resists the hail that bruises a standard shingle, and many Colorado insurers discount the premium for one. Weigh the up-front cost against that discount and against the odds of another claim.
